Newquay's new gay bar opened with a flourish of camp colour at the weekend.

Drag Queens from Manchester's Canal Street entertained inside the Queen Vic as revellers danced the night away until the early hours. The Fore Street bar, formerly known as Corkers Quayside, had been transformed into a party-goers paradise for more than 400 revellers.

Manager Laura Connock was delighted with the opening night.

She said: "It was absolutely fantastic. We had about 200 people in at any one time and 400 throughout the night.

"It was a fantastic atmosphere and no aggravation at all. There were so many straight people there and so many people came up to me as they were leaving to thank me."

Bar bosses hope the Queen Vic will become the number one gay venue in Cornwall.

On Saturday night, people travelled from Redruth, St Ives, Camborne, Truro and from other parts of the county to join in the party.

Miss Connock said: "I really hope it will be successful for a long time. We are going to stage a big event every single weekend. The bar will be open during the day as well."

The Queen Vic currently has a licence to open until 2am but is currently applying for a 4am licence. Plans are also afoot to extend the premises to allow a capacity of 700 people which will also enable the venue to stage shows.
